Are Wellio videos affected by the social media age restrictions?

We understand there’s growing discussion about potential restrictions on social media access for young people in Australia. Some schools have asked if this impacts how Wellio uses video in lessons.

The short answer: No – not at this stage.

There is no mandate requiring schools to block or remove YouTube-based content from education platforms like Wellio. We are closely monitoring the evolving situation and will respond quickly if government guidance changes.

How Wellio uses YouTube

While our video clips are hosted on YouTube, we use a secure embedding tool called Vlite to restrict access. This means:

  • Only the selected clip plays within Wellio

  • No suggested videos, ads, comments, or YouTube navigation

  • Students do not interact with the video through their own device

The video is treated purely as a player – not as a gateway to YouTube.

If your school has specific filters in place for teachers, you may need to ask IT to whitelist the Wellio video links. See our Video Troubleshooting Guide for more info.

What happens if policies change?

If government policies change and YouTube-hosted content becomes restricted for schools, we will explore alternative hosting solutions to continue delivering seamless lesson experiences.
